Re: Welcome to Club XIII

Honestly, Zip, I had a really hard time with what you were calling melody. So I looked up the dictionary definition. 1 : pleasing arrangement of sounds. 2 : a series of musical notes or tones arranged in a definite pattern of pitch and rhythm. 3 : the main part in a musical composition. To me, the f...

Re: Welcome to Club XIII

I'm finding myself wanting to like "Maria's Awful Disclosures" a lot more than I do. It's weirdly non-melodic (a-melodic?) and the singing sometimes feels like it goes to a different song than Cooley is singing. Maybe it will grow on me. I've tried to interpret this post for the last day or so. Eit...

The frozen kind? As far as I can tell the raw material is still readily available. Do folks not know what the “tater” in “tater tots” is in reference to? 🥔
Kenji Lopez-Alt has a killer recipe for tots that he reverse engineered. They’re great and you can customize
them.

Re: Welcome to Club XIII

“Shake & Pine” has wormed its way into my brain in a big way. Patterson isn’t always a big melody guy, but there’s a very sneaky hook here. There’s a vibe that reminds me of the best of Heat Lightning here. It hits me in the same way “Better Off Without” and “Disappear” did. Autumnal. Weary, but po...

Re: Welcome to Club XIII

I’ll tell you, though, the more time goes on, I think We Will Never Wake You Up in the Morning, is the best song on the record. It might be one of Patterson’s best songs ever in the same territory as The Living Bubba, Ever South and a few others. I've done some thinking of how this song fits in wit...

Someone remind me: are Pin Hits/DIY “Billy Ringo” songs?

Let’s get a full list of them. “Better Than The Truth” obviously.
I don’t think so. Pin Hits the Shell and DIY are specifically about AHC bassist John Cahoon, while Billy Ringo is a composite character (who might include Cahoon but idk)

She's a huge fan so I think the general descriptions of those two songs is most likely by design, although she probably doesn't know the Jimmy C. connection. In turn Patterson is fan of hers as well. If I'm reading Patterson's comments correctly, he didn't write Shake & Pine with Jimmy in mind but ...

No, I don’t think they are, though they may be remembered as such (a la Big Star) If they aren't they're well on their way to being that. Their fans include fiction writers, filmmakers, historians and television personalities. In the past few years Heather Cox Richardson, George Pelacanos and other...

Re: Welcome to Club XIII

The exceptions category seems pretty big (Shit Shots, Jimmy, Slow Ride, etc) but even with the exceptions and the possible question marks, I think your observation holds up very well. Kudos. I think “Slow Ride” fits into the “family observations” category. Better than “Filthy and Fried” does, proba...

Oh, I remember having the conversation and your issue with the “big old brain” line. Equivocal opinions are not your way lol. I guess what I'm asking is how does not enjoying that song relate to it's nearly direct sequel in Every Single Storied Flameout.

The song is the inevitable conclusion to Eyes Like Glue I remember not a lot of love when it came out. 12 years later, seems folks have caught up Or one might argue that the distance between "Eyes Like Glue" and "Every Single Storied Flameout" explains why there was not a lot of love for the former...

Re: Welcome to Club XIII

Speaking of "Forged in Hell," the POV it maintains and the "conversation" between Patterson and Ms. Price are pretty extraordinary. The song neither glorifies nor disparages those wild, crazy days of yore, but it traces how it made us who we are and led us to today, and in particular how it all pla...

Re: Welcome to Club XIII

It's been a long time since I've written a proper write-up/review of a Drive-By Truckers record upon its release. Re: Welcome to Club XIII

Who was Maria, what did she disclose, and why was it awful? Also the weird guitar part on this song reminds me of Tomorrow Never Knows from Revolver. It's a QAnon analog based on "The Awful Disclosures of Maria Monk" which was a sensation in the early to mid-nineteenth century. The disclosures, lik...

Re: Welcome to Club XIII

I read once that the most important thing we lose when someone passes is a point of view, I can't imagine anyone epitomizing that more than Smitty. I agree with that completely but would add to it Smitty's enthusiasm for the subject (broadly defined) and his openness/willingness to learn despite hi...
