Ryan Adams and the Cardinals...or a Whiskeytown reunion (yeah, right) Son Volt Old 97s The Avett Brothers Chris Knight Chris Knight is great live. Son Volt... YMMV. I hear you. I saw them on Austin City Limits and Jay barely moved. It was like he had suffered a severe head injury as a child. I'd li...

Re: A Truer Sound

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm a big fan of ATS but it's been kind of quiet lately.

Re: WOW moments- Recordings

The first time I hear The Doors when I was about 10. I think it was Light My Fire. I'd never heard vocals like Morrison's before and it was so different from anything else I'd ever heard. It blew me away. More recently, Decoration Day. That was my first DBT album and every song gave me goose bumps. ...

Re: R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio

I was practically weaned on Ozzy era Sabbath and hated the change-up. But the first time I heard Mob Rules and Heaven and Hell I adjusted. I hit emusic this morning to DL Mob Rules and man, talk about flashbacks. I was like 12 when that album came out. Rest in Peace RJD. You knew how to ROCK it.

Re: New Parent woes

I'm tempted to say it'll get better. And it will. But you will still need to dig deep and recalibrate your coping abilities to deal with everything from diapers to birthday parties. It's all good though. Especially once you grasp the concept that your needs are now much less relevant. Kind of like a...

Re: Top 5 MUST KNOW classic rock songs for guitarists

Some good suggestions so far, much appreciated. Last night I learned "Let It Be". Can't go wrong with that one. Probably work on a few more Beatles tunes while I'm at it. Good campfire stuff if nothing else.

Re: Top 5 MUST KNOW classic rock songs for guitarists

I guess I'm thinking...taking a big stab here, songs from say, U2 or the Eagles or Skynyrd or AC/DC or Sabbath or the Dead. You know, something you can strum, maybe pick out a few chords or play a riff, get your average girl swooning? I know most of the relevant chords, have been practicing the comm...

Top 5 MUST KNOW classic rock songs for guitarists

After years of listening to it, I decided to learn to play it. The primary inspiration being DBT. So just over a year ago I bought an acoustic and started to teach myself guitar. I play every day whether it's minutes or hours and I'm slowly making steady progress. Then, just the other day, a guy I m...

Re: uncle tupelo today

PS - the second disc of Whiskeytown's Deluxe Strangers Almanac is so fucking good, excuse my language, that it's worth listening to even if you think you don't like Ryan Adams.

Re: uncle tupelo today

I got into Son Volt and to a lesser degree Wilco because of Uncle Tupelo. And I became a Ryan Adams fan because of Whiskeytown. I was exposed to them first and they led to the others. And in response to the question would UT be as big a deal now. It's almost a chicken and the egg question. Sure ther...

Re: Formerly Known As.....

Tobias Hume = Scratch Tobias Hume was an obscure reference in an Annie Proulx short story, but also turned out to be mercenary / soldier / musician in the 1600s Scratch, or 'Scratch, is short for Briarscratch a web 'nym I've had for years that refers to one of my other obsessions - namely following ...

Re: DBT Concert Etiquette

I have an etiquette question. Is there ever a time when yelling "COOLEY!" at the top of your lungs inappropriate? And for the record, the times I was able to get up front I always held spots, defended against (frat) ruffians and met the best fans ever. I even got to shake Cooley's hand onc...
