Re: Greatest Hits release?

Really enjoying this album, although I guess we could all come up with at least half a dozen songs that didnt make the cut that we feel could improve it. For me "Let there be rock" just sounds ridiculously out of place on this album, that song is Spinal Tap-esque in its "rawk" a...

I've got a ride to near New Orleans for the two Tipitina's shows. We'll see if I can make the budget tolerate it. In the meantime:

Yes, I think you are reading into it somewhat, but you are so much more in touch with reality than many of the commenters on the blog entry itself that I feel churlish making even that mild criticism of you.

Re: Go Go Boots at the Six Month Mark

I had a very vivid dream last night that Tom T. Hall was singing "Pulaski". I dreamed recently I found a Springsteen bootleg on vinyl which opened with "Whispering Pines". I'm not a fan of "Assholes" because I really don't have a dog in that fight. I own a lot of New W...

I had to go to Wikipedia to count the albums. I guess I could've just said Music of My Mind, Innervisions, and Talking Book and left it at that.

Re: Anonymity and the Internet

Here's what one of the smartest thinkers I know on this subject has to say: “Real Names” Policies Are an Abuse of Power . So there are a few good reasons why some people sometimes prefer anonymity. Not that that really addresses the issue, but OK, it's true enough. I don't think this is a preferenc...

The winner and still champeen: Stevie Wonder--EVERYTHING THROUGH Fulfillingness' First Finale . That's twelve albums, which range from really good to mindbreakingly brilliant. Honorable Mention: Stevie Winwood--Spencer Davis Group and all the good Traffic records Van Morrison--Them, Astral Weeks and...

But Ry Cooder--the authors were more sympathetic than not toward him. I'd be interested in knowing more about what's wrong with that chapter, if someone more knowledgable would care to tell me more. The authors definitely say more positive things about Cooder than i remembered, but on the whole, I'...

So I'm almost done with Faking It --just the last chapter to go--and I'm impressed. I didn't find him particularly hard on Ry Cooder--the worst the authors say of him is "naive and occasionally patronizing"--and as far as I'm concerned, you can't say enough bad things about Henry Ford. It ...

Re: My 16 Year Old Son's Case For Rush in the RRHOF

In retrospect, the 80's also saw a lot of great artists from the 60's/70's put out complete drivel (I'm looking at you, Stevie Wonder) Most of the drivel was duet and sideman work. Hotter Than July is a real good record. But it did take till the nineties for the soundtrack to Jungle Fever to come o...

"So easy to look at, so hard to define." Goddamn. What a song. What an album. Desire is an album that I have always felt was criminally underated. Rarely do I read and or hear people singing it's praises. I think Dylan's three album run of Desire, Planet Waves, and Blood On The Tracks sta...

Even Tom Petty who came out of the seventies artist pile seemed reinvigorated in the eighties and was even occasionally referred to as "New Wave" (why I will never know for sure). I remember Petty and Van Halen being marketed as "punk" but that was in the late 70s when punk and ...

If you know one song by Bob Dylan, it should be Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts. So, perhaps you can tell me what Lily, Rosemary & the Jack of Hearts is about, John A. I've gone a lot of years wondering about that. I was wondering if anyone was gonna take a stab at 1 dylan song, so you g...

Re: DBT track # 63 - Self Destructive Zones

I read a piece on Dylan once that described him as an image-monger. I think Cooley does that, too, sometimes, stacking one thing on top of another with no meaning but the images themselves in juxtaposition with each other. Trying to shoehorn them into more standard devices of meaning isn't producti...

Janis was quite a performer, and she did a great service establishing that you didn't have to be pretty to be a great performer, but I've never quite gotten why she's compared to Jimi Hendrix, other than their nearness in culture and date of death.

I'd also recommend Phil Lesh's Searching for the Sound: My Life with the Grateful Dead . I really liked David Gans' Playing in the Band , which h...
