Re: Favorite Albums of the Decade (The 80s)

Steve French said: my opinion is that your statement holds true for EVERY decade. I think one of the reasons we all have a fairly similar list of stuff from the 60's and 70's is that only the good stuff gets remembered, and played, thirty or forty years on. I do tend to gloss over the warts and blem...

Re: Favorite Albums of the Decade (The 80s)

dime - I can see leapfrogging the 00's over the 90's (if only for the emergence of DBT), but I can't move it past the 60's. The sheer panorama of sound that came forth that decade pretty much formed rock as we know it. I cant put the 50's ahead of the 90's if only because it's 1/2 a decade worth of ...

Re: Favorite Albums of the Decade (The 80s)

I was born in 1957, at the Dawn of R & R. I've heard everything from Elvis and Jerry Lee and Buddy Holly and Sam Cooke right on through to the Arctic Monkeys and the Hold Steady and even Fall Out Boy. I've heard most of the best stuff in Rock, and a whole lotta the worst it can offer; and IMO th...

Re: DBT in Rock History

cortez - I may be geezin' too, but I'm kicked back with a stogie; listening to Danger Bird (forgot how much I loved that one). All is good on the mid-Atlantic front. Thanks for helping me remember something I should never have forgotten. The crunchiness of Neil w/ Crazy Horse. On a side note, I don'...

No the quote button is not there (on any of my computers). Probably explains why I cant fix any of my crappy grammar. I don't see an edit button either. beantownbubba wrote: (<<-- I typed this) And just to stop one likely tangent: Yes, an album's "importance" is often related to its contex...

Re: DBT in Rock History

bubba - I agree with what you're saying 100%. If we're evaluating music for the musics' sake then it should stand alone on it's' own merit, regardless of the circumstances surrounding its' creation. If we're rock historians then it matters if the Beatles visited the Dhali Lama or not (or whether DBT...

Re: DBT in Rock History

cortez - sorry if I'm beating a dead horse here. It was a subject that has piqued my interest for awhile, and I figured this was about the best place that I could see how others felt. 'Sides I figured if we were talking onesies and all that, then this should be fair game. I'm gonna whip out my copy ...

Re: DBT in Rock History

Ya know btb, I guess I was so happy i boxed a quote; that i misunderstood dime's question. If we're just evaluating the relative merit of an album (or artist); the circumstances under which it was produced should not come into play.

Re: 3 Dimes T-shirts

Have we picked a color? I'd prefer it not be candy apple red if we're still voting. A darker brooding color is needed. I love sketch (#2) and Ain't got no good intentions on the back. Guiter should maybe be kiltered to the right, as if it were being played. It might make it easier to read the names....

Re: DBT in Rock History

btb - The music is the music, no doubt. All i was saying is that artists who are hungrier, in general, tend to be more creative. Bands who've made it have more distractions and might not feel the need to prove themselves every record. I do agree with damn near everything that revmatt has been saying...

Re: Daddy's Little Pumpkin

I happened to read the comments on the npr site. One purist decried the Lambchop & Darlins songs as just not getting what John Prine was all about. I had a sneaking suspicion I would like them, and I did. There some fresh takes on some prime Prine. I especially enjoyed Bruised Orange, Spanish Pi...

Re: DBT in Rock History

do the circumstances under which gb or sro were recorded "add" to the brilliance of these albums? does context factor in when evaluating these type things? I think that they do factor greatly. I would imagine that you'd find that the hungrier artists are more creative (which to me points ...

Re: DBT in Rock History

The fact that the Truckers run to glory started at such an advanced point in their lives, has given them a different perspective than just about any other band. They seem far more driven to make music that they enjoy playing, than they seem compelled to churn out catchy ditties that might make them ...

Radio stations used to try and outscoop each other on the next big thing. The record companies too. Instant fame, like that which befell the Oneders in That Thing You Do, actually did happen. They'd play Jan & Dean, ? & the Mysterions, the Boxtops, the Electric Prunes, Gerry & the Pacema...

I wouldn't argue any of your points Rev. Their catalog rivals the Who in general (and that's sayin' somethin'). They have issued forth quality & quantity. Whether they get the credit they deserve remains to be seen. I opened this thread (usually I kill them) 'coz it's a subject that puzzles me. ...

I think it fair to say that DBT gives to music, something akin to what Teddy accomplished (rough ridin' super environmentalist though he may be).

Re: DBT in Rock History

Maybe Blues Traveler was a stretch, but the beginning of Hook (and a coupla other numbers) twang me in a Southern way. If you said Janis Joplin or Johnny Winter or even Edgar Winter were Southern Rock acts (which I don't feel as though they are), then my list would be completely jumbled. Funny thing...

Re: DBT in Rock History

Fair comparisons Rev, though I daresay that Little Feat did achieve stardom. The Replacements did have a similar trajectory, but even with the wonderful Westerberg they couldn't match the 2 & 3 pronged assault that is DBT (and they even had their fair share of the burgeoning alternative radio ma...

Re: DBT in Rock History

That is true. The corporate radioheads and their playlists have made it almost impossible for anything new and unusual to crack the mainstream. DBT's stuff is so delicious that you'd think they'd have overcome that handicap. Satellite radios' Outlaw Country seems to have been made for them. I guess ...

DBT in Rock History

About a year ago, a co-worker of mine (and co-DBT junkie) asked me why the band wasn't more well known than it was. He couldn't fathom how a group who had released SRO (as good as Quadraphenia), DD (as fine as the Beatles' White Album or Eat a Peach), and the Dirty South (as special as Street Surviv...

Re: Tarrytown, NY 6/4

Thanks for the link. I was front and Cooleyside for the encore (as up close and personal as I've ever been to the band). This will help me more accurately recall just how special that show was (my memory having been clouded by Capt. Lawrence).
