Appears the album will be called American Band.
Why can't Cooley sing anymore? What happened? Is it strictly an age thing?

Re: Isbell ... 4 Nights at the Ryman

I'll be there Friday only. Friends: if you haven't already secured accommodations for Fri and Sat, good luck. I had hoped to stay downtown but the few rooms I could find are out of my range - apparently Vandy has a home game and I waited too late. The Titans home game on Sunday is more likely the c...

Bro-Country? I don't think that word means what you think it means. I meant the video and not the song. Though I'm not a fan of the song either. I edited my post to say "truck commercial" rather than "bro-country" as I think that's more accurate. I can live with that description. Not enough boobs a...

Actually I'm going back through this thread reading song meanings. I feel like I do better when I have a really good grasp on the song and I often need to read others opinions to get that grasp. Just read RevMatt's description of 'Primer Coat' and listened to it again. Total gut punch. I have two da...

I've decided to put the album on the shelf for a week or two. I've listened to it in its entirety every day since release and it's just not happening for me. So I'm going to take a break and come back to it in a week or two.

What does everyone think of the live album? I wish it was recorded with the current edition of The 400 Unit plus Amanda. Jason's solos sound much better when there is rhythm guitar underneath. 1) Here We Rest 2) Southeastern 3) Sirens 4) Self Titled For me, the horns on the live album make the albu...

The vulgar part of the song is not that word, but cancer. Cancer is vulgar. Extremely vulgar if you've had to sit and watch someone die from it. I think he uses that word to snap the listeners head around a little bit. And then get to the gist of the song.

Re: dbt tracks week 23 - Uncle Frank ---> T.V.A.

I get what you are saying. Jason's been known to take some license with his story songs. In Decoration Day where he says his (the character) daddy's grave isn't marked, it really is marked. It even says "King of Mt Zion" on it. And if I'm going to be overly-critical, Cooley's song isn't 10...

Does it bother anybody else that TVA is historically inaccurate? 1) TVA didn't build Wilson Dam 2) Wilson Dam was finished before the creation of TVA and the presidency of Roosevelt. He could have helped build one of the other dams I guess, but Wilson is the largest and the only one that might have ...

I definitely get a Ryan Adams vibe on some songs too. Relatively Easy is one that really makes me think of Ryan Adams, but its post-Love is Hell crappy Ryan Adams. So far, I'm not liking this as well as Here We Rest. Too much hype with all of the 'career defining masterpiece' talk I guess. There hav...

Basic backstory: In the late 70s, a lot of car dealers burned here in the Shoals. I assume the name "Big Jim Stevens" comes from the current Chevy dealership in Muscle Shoals, Jim Bishop, and current one in Florence, Nelda Stephenson. "Big Jim Stevens" in the song is actually a m...

Re: Johnny Neff Quits

A couple of thoughts that nobody cares about: 1) Robert Randolph and Neff don't play the same style of steel at all. Neff plays traditional pedal steel. RR only uses the pedals to change the tuning and not in a traditional way such as to change the pitch of one string while the pitch of another stri...

A little pre-DBT history for yall

In the Liner Notes for The Dirty South, Patterson says (loosely paraphrasing) that "Mike Cooley discovered Rock n Roll when his father took him to see Carl Perkins at the Hayloft Opry in downtown Tuscumbia Alabama." Well, my father played in the house band at the Hayloft Opry. Here is a ne...

I love THE SONG "Pulaski", but I don't care for the arrangement. I heard live recordings of Cooley doing this on acoustic as far back as 2001 and I liked those versions much more than the one on Go Go Boots. Still a great song. Yeah, I feel the same. In fact, I find myself liking each new...

Pretty lame crowd for most of the show. As mstaper noted, I'm sure the "elderly " had a lot to do with that though.
