For oilpiers wherever he may be: In one of the stories in Don Winslow's new book, Broken, Winslow waxes poetically and ecstatically (although briefly) about Francisco Tatis.

I haven't read any Simenon in a while. Thanks for the reminder.

That Raymond Gary sounds interesting. I'll be on the lookout for it.

Re: Books Thread

I'm not much of a fan of short stories/novellas (not exactly sure of the difference) so despite being a big Don Winslow fan, I don't know if I would have picked up his latest, Broken, if I had known it was a story collection. That would have been a mistake. Perhaps not his best, but that's an awfull...

I liked the first couple of episodes of Space Force when I watched it a while back (I think I may have posted about it here) but hadn't followed up until last nite. Episode 3 is all kinds of funny. I haven't laughed that much at an alleged comedy in a looong time.

This is a fan board. From time to time we can be a little less than objective in our reactions to the band, the shows, new music, etc. We can be a bit overenthusiastic and expansive. I say that to distinguish the following comments which are none of that: Cooley was absolutely extraordinary tonight....

No, I'm right there with you. That's all that matters. But I still care about the other stuff too. I won't run Harris down in any "public" forum, but at this point, it's mostly a left of center conversation in this forum and I figured we can be candid. Yep. That woman probably thinks Kamala Harris ...

True story: Bruce Springsteen did a solo stories/songs/Q&A fundraiser. Tix were incredibly expensive, seating was very limited. One would think this was a "superfan only" kind of thing. We get to the Q&A. First question: From a guy who went to the even more expensive, even more exclusive VIP meet & ...

The Old Guard (Netflix) - Enjoyable. Diverting. Charlize Theron. Get off my lawn department: I know I'm decades too late, but damn, it still annoys the hell out of me the way Hollywood shamelessly sets up and shills for sequels in the current movie. It leaves a bad taste and ends the movie on an of...

I'm sorry, but the Harris pick sucks. This administration will do jack shit to address criminal reform and end the war on drugs. I'm still voting for them, but color me unimpressed. I mean this in the nicest possible way but, who cares? Fuck Trump. Beat Trump. Get Trump the fuck out of the White Ho...

Unbeknownst to me, the great Don Winslow's latest book, Broken, is a collection of short stories. The second story is called "For Mr. Steve McQueen." The song would be a fitting soundtrack for the story.

Since the news cycle seems to be down to about 2 hours, everything that happened while the site was down or over the couple of days I was away is now somewhere between untimely and ancient history. So I'll just say that our political situation is completely off the charts nuts and it's really too ba...

Re: The TV thread

I thought the season finale of Perry Mason was awfully disappointing. Very undramatic or anticlimactic and a bit too cutesy at least as far as the Perry-Della relationship goes. But still, I do hope there's more to come. There was plenty to like in the series.

If the USA were a sports team it would be the Dallas Cowboys:

-haven't won anything in ages but still strut around like the cock o' the walk

-supporters are loud and obnoxious

-loathed by many

-led by preening narcissists
Nice. A direct hit.

Did anyone catch the premiere of Perry Mason on HBO? Definitely has potential. Oddly it’s a gritty 1930’s noir with nothing to do with the original series at all but does harken back to the source material. We've been really enjoying this and I'm looking forward to tonight's episode. I will say tha...

Earlier this month, my wife, daughter and I took advantage of my son's time in Alaska to visit there. How far down the rabbit hole of weird cinema do you want to go? I'm hit or miss on weird cinema. I do like movies that are off the beaten path of recycled plot lines/character types. I generally favor plots that are at least somewhat followable. I'm not easily offended. I've liked a little of David...
