Re: Louisville

Fun show. Cooley opened with Birthday Boy and then Hood revealed it was Cooley's birthday. They brought a cake on stage and Hood and the crowd sang Happy Birthday and then Cooley blew out the candles. Also, I may not have heard correctly through the crowed noise and my ears melting from the rock sho...

I can't even....I don't have the words.....this was the show I needed after the week thus far. The shows started with a statement of intent....the mass shooting song, the NRA song, the post-Charleston song, and the Confederate flag song. We got Tom Petty covers, a new song about Charlottesville, and...

If it's a 4:00 show with an opener, I'd guess 5:30ish? At least I hope so. Blue Oyster Cult is playing the House of Blues that night and I'd like to see the Truckers, then walk a mile to see BOC immediately afterward.

Re: Isbell SOTW Week 12 - Stopping By

I've always thought the teenage girl in Chattanooga was the narrator's mother, and I've always pictured the narrator as a female. Come to think of it, the teenage girl could very well be the present-day narrator (old enough to drive and make a road trip to Atlanta), but my mind never connected it th...

Re: Isbell SOTW Week 2 - Sunstroke

They're more alike as songwriters than either of them are like Patterson. If you wee to call Patterson a master at exposition and detail, Cooley a master of phrase and color you would have to say Jason is able to do either, sometimes both in the same song but with a perspective all his own. I agree...

What's the general consensus (ha) on "Maybe these colors will fade"? What's fading? His drinking? Fame? Hurt? Blue with sadness Green with envy Red with rage Wow. I thought I responded with those three very colors earlier in the thread, but it turns out I never got around to addressing it. It's one...

Just thought of something....

So maybe they'll stop asking me
"What really happened? Where is your masterpiece?"

Four years after this song came out, Jason openly and honestly answered both of those questions in a big way.

Re: Isbell SOTW Week 2 - Sunstroke

I always thought the sunstroke line was more of a Casablance-esque "the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world" type of thing. There's all this drama and heartache about Jason & Shonna and Jason & DBT and the problems that result from those splits, but as...

I agree about the air conditioner line. It crushes me every single time. It's definitely near the very top of all the great lines he has ever written. Whether it was intentional or not in terms of how much of himself may have possibly seeped into the song, I too saw this song in a different light af...

Re: Jason Isbell - Something More Than Free 7/17

Wikipedia doesn't note his name as anything other than Jason Looking up lyrics back in the day must be how I stumbled across it. Formal songwriting credits definitely list his first name as Michael. For example, I just did a quick google search and found that "Feb 14" is credited to "John Michael C...

Re: Jason Isbell - Something More Than Free 7/17

Also, the part about "At 17 I went by Michael"-- that's his dad's name, I take that to mean that growing up in a family like that you've got the expectation of living up to your mom's/dad's name on you from the start, even if their name isn't your own. Damn tight spot to try to fit into. If I'm not...

Two corrections... 1. There you stood looking proud 2. At least you all got the joke off the bat Also, thank you for "makes the miles melt away." After reading the comments of the various SWIMS.... What do the underwhelmed folks think of the songs? Are they good songs that get lost in presentation? My only reference point is 24 Frames, and I really liked the "rock" live version, and now I see where the studio version is much tamer by comparis...

Guess we got lucky in Columbus on Tuesday. Not only did we get those two songs, but we got them back to back in the #5 and #6 slots. By far the earliest I had ever heard Never Gonna Change in the set.

Seeing Jason in Columbus tonight. I'm kinda nervous about the theater seating because most theaters were built over a century ago when the average man was like 5'8" tall or something. I'm 6'4" and sometimes it is literally impossible for me to fit my legs because of the proximity of the se...

Re: Zac Brown Band Recorded Dress Blues

Even more significant than brucellosis is when Hood sings "gonna drink 'til I get my fill" instead of "to see if I can drink enough." Zevon's line is loaded on so many levels. It's perfect and Hood strangely chooses to neuter it. Ditto for "been acting strange" vs. &quo...

Re: Zac Brown Band Recorded Dress Blues

Heck, Jason and Amanda make a slight alteration to Mutineer. They leave the "us" off of "Lightning flashed and thunder followed us / It could never find us here." I guess this means Patterson, Jason, and Amanda don't like how Zevon writes songs and they clearly shouldn't be cover...

Patterson alters way more lyrics to Play It All Night Long than this country guy did to Dress Blues. And Patterson's are far more egregious than "godawful war" vs. "Hollywood war."

And Skully's was a huge step up from scant crowds at Rumba Cafe and The Basement.

The Southern Theater seats 925.
