I totally get what you're saying, they're generally more straight-forward and catchier than Patterson's stuff, especially over the last couple of albums.

Re: American Band- 9/30/16
btw this isn't aimed at just you Iowan as I've seen multiple people (especially on the DBT fb page) make remarks regarding Patterson and "preachers & killing" songs, but by my math Patterson has had 147 original songs officially released (not counting "Town Burned Down", covers or multiple versions...

Re: American Band- 9/30/16
The "cramming" thing isn't about the number of words, it's about phrasing: where the syllables fall in relation to the rhythm. For example, the line "Once they banned imagine it became the same old war it's always been" packs a lot of words into a small space, but it sounds completely natural when ...

It seems like a book you could reread in sections, though, just picking chapters here and there. I feel like I could just go over everything Koroviev and Behemoth again right now.

Yeah, to be honest I'm not entirely sure why you'd want to! It would be pretty hard to follow. Though I guess they've made that 8-hour adaptation of Satantango, so nothing is impossible.
I take it it wasn't your favorite?

Re: Books Thread
Just finished it. I found it hilarious, powerful and charming. I laughed out loud a couple times, most notably in the bureau scene where no one can stop singing. Frankly, I'm just really glad I read it.

Re: American Band- 9/30/16
I've thought this for awhile now, but in general Cooley is the better lyricist/guitar player/songwriter, but Patterson is the more interesting one. He misses a lot, but when he hits - goddamn. I don't think I've ever teared up to a Cooley song, but Patterson has a couple gut punchers on AB alone - "...

Re: American Band- 9/30/16
Of all the songs, "Filthy & Fried" was the one that brings the tears to my eyes. I need to get deeper. Wow, really? Guns Of Umpqua is the tear jerker for me. I can't listen to it around people really, if I do I try to take my mind elsewhere because if I listen too close I will get glassy eyed. Yeah...

Re: American Band- 9/30/16
I think that "KH" has a great premise, some good lyrics, but musically it falls flat. It's stonesy but it a totally turgid way, it doesn't pick up any energy like "Shit Shots Count" or "Ramon Casiano," maybe Cooley's best song in a long time.
Regardless, can't wait to listen to this more.

Re: American Band- 9/30/16
Seems to me like there are only one real clunker ("Kinky Hypocrites") and a whole ton of potential classics ("Ramon Casiano," "Darkened Flags," "Ever South" (especially)), and it's way more consistent than English Oceans. Edit: not sure what I was thinking about "Sun Don't Shine." Not a clunker at a...

Re: Goodbye Gawker
Here's a wild thought: I have, pretty much 100% of the time, had an even lower opinion of Gawker than you do. And yet, this is still a net loss. Just because this is a jury trial (which, incidentally, was initiated so that tapes of Hogan spouting racist invective wouldn't go public) doesn't mean it ...

Re: Goodbye Gawker
Gawker did a lot of scummy things that were perfectly within the law. They sucked, but it was for the greater good. Peter Thiel shut down a site he didn't like by secretly funding a bullshit lawsuit with his massive fortune. You really think he won't do it again? It already almost happened to Mother...
