Re: What's Everyone Listening to?

I'm going to be listening to a lot of ^this. I've joined up with an ad hoc band of guys who are playing Exile in it's entirety. One of whom had a fairly prominent role (though brief) role in the DBT doc. that's bad ass on the band. is it the pie dude? Nope. You know the guy who does the "Fuck Britn...

Re: Seminal albums you just don't get

Anything by Pink Floyd. Cannot stand 98% of it. People lose their minds over the Pixies, and I ought to like them, but I'm just ambivalent on them. In DBT land, I just can't get into Decoration Day. There's a few songs on there I'll listen to, but the rest don't do much for me.

This review pisses me off, simply for comparing Hood to Brian Fallon. I REALLY don't like Gaslight Anthem, and he's the main reason for that.

Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread

Kudzu, that's pretty much why I'm doing it. It's not a moral thing for me, really. Mainly, I'm graduating college this semester, and I have a good feeling that this album is going to be one of THOSE albums, where it's a distinct time/place album in my life, you know? I know that if I got a hold of i...

Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread

Guys, there's one week to go before the album comes out. I still haven't heard anything, but only what has been released/played on the radio. I'm dying! I don't wanna cop out and grab the leak with just one week left, then I will have waited all this time for naught!

Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread

I'm not saying that the Hood/Cooley partnership is lacking, especially since Cooley may be my favorite writer working today, but I'll still miss having a unique third writer as well, even if I never enjoyed that third writer as much as the big two.

Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread

I can only speak on the songs that I've heard, which only amounts to Shit Shots, Paulene, Primer Coat, and Jimmy Loud, but the only one where I think Neff would've been interesting on is Primer Coat. I think there could've been some nice pedal steel licks on it, but really overall, and I mean this a...

Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread

While we're on the subject of "leaner and meaner band," I wholeheartedly agree. I've seen the band three times, once on The Big To Do tour, once on the Go-Go Boots tour, and once on the tour after that, RIGHT after Neff had left. MAYBE a month after he left. The first and third shows were ...

Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread

As much as I want to hear this, I'm gonna refrain. I graduate college (Kinda-five years as an undergrad, then another two years post-grad. Yippee!) soon after this album breaks. This album, like a few DBT discs before, notably ABAAC, BTCD, and GGB, has serious potential to be one of those albums. By...

Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread

No, I think I like Primer Coat better, too. I think it's more about where I am in life, personally, right now.

That said, I'm liking "Hearing Jimmy Loud" more and more each listen. Either way, I'm dying to get my hands on this record. Real talk.

Re: Album of the Week: Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distanc

I liked this album pretty well ever since I bought it, but it just sort-of clicked with me today. Might be because I walked out of the only job I've known for the past seven years yesterday. "Better Off Without" and "Better Than The Truth" particularly resonated.

Awesome. Not to bash on the previous bassists, but when I saw 'em with Matt, it was the first time I noticed the bass at a DBT show. Plus, he was clearly having a blast.

Re: DBT Albums Week 9 -- Brighter Than Creation's Dark

I first really got into DBT during my freshman year in college, here at Mizzou. This was the 2009-2010 school year, and I was living in the dorms. I got The Big To-Do, as DBT was set to play a show at the Blue Note, and I wanted to be current with their new album, their two earliest, and Southern Ro...

Re: Can we discuss this: Todd Farrell rips off A Ghost To Mo

I once subconsciously ripped off the guitar riff from Robert Cray's "Smoking Gun." Lucky for me, only my roommate heard, and he didn't recognize it, until I put on an old blues comp. Then he said that I covered that song well. Which was slightly after I realized that I totally copied it. *...

I'm fine with them not having "indie" cred, especially with what passes for "indie" nowadays. In fact, I think the lack of indie cred is endearing.

Re: DBT Albums - Week 2 - A Blessing and A Curse

As this was the first DBT album I bought, this one has a soft spot with me. Especially "Gravity's Gone" and "Feb.14." Both really hit on me at an appropriate time when I picked up the CD, and I've loved those songs ever since. I finally caught Cooley playing that at the last DBT ...

Re: New album?

I think an album like Springsteen's "The River." Mind you, I'm not saying that they have to put out a bajillion songs on one album, but stylistically speaking, a lot like that Boss album. You have a few rockers, (Cadillac Ranch, Two Hearts, etc.) A few dark songs (The River, Point Blank, e...
